Big Lots, one of the most popular discount retailers in the United States, will close 315 stores. See the full list and locations.
After posting a net loss of $205 million during the first quarter of 2024 and an increase in long-term debt of $573.8 million, Big Lots, one of the most popular discount retail chains in the United States, announced the closure of more than 300 stores in the country.
The Columbus, Ohio-based company disclosed the closures in a regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. According to the filing, 315 stores will be closed by 2024, representing 22% of its U.S. locations.
The closures were determined based on the stores’ performance, meaning that those with the lowest profits will be the ones to close. As for the staff of the affected branches, the company reported that requests for transfer to nearby branches will be accepted if the workers so wish. Otherwise, they will be given severance pay.
According to Bruce Thorn, the company’s president and CEO, sales have been affected, in large part, by “a continued reduction in consumer spending by our key customers, particularly on high-priced discretionary items.”
