Emmys 2020: 'Succession' wins best drama, 'Schitt's Creek' sweeps comedy categories (2024)

The hit Canadian comedy "Schitt's Creek" made historyon avery weirdEmmy Awards night Sunday, sweeping the comedy categories, while "Watchmen" took best limited series and "Succession won four honors, including best drama.

Zendaya snagged best lead actress in a drama for "Euphoria" and Jeremy Strong nabbed lead actor for "Succession" – which also won outstanding writing and directing Emmys – atthe annual awards-season kickoff.Due to COVID-19, the eventcame to audiences virtually, with Jimmy Kimmel hosting alone inLos Angeles' Staples Center and winners and nominees appearing via video.

"Schitt's Creek" became the first TV showin Emmys history – comedy or drama – to sweep its night. It took seven honors including best comedy series,lead actor and actress for Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara, and supporting actor and best writing forDaniel Levy.

"The Morning Show" star Billy Crudup won for supporting actor in a drama and Julia Garnerwas named best supporting actress for "Ozark."

In the limited series categories, "Watchmen" also won best lead actress (Regina King), supporting actor (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and an outstanding-writing Emmy. MarkRuffalo took lead actor for "I Know This Much Is True," Uzo Aduba took supporting actressfor "Mrs. America," while Maria Schrader earned an Emmy for outstanding directing for Netflix's "Orthodox."
